On Saturday, December 7, it will be the 83rd anniversary of the Japanese surprise attack on the U.S. military bases on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. That act brought the United States into WWII. Recently, I was asked by a young lady (high school age) in a local museum store here in Fredericksburg why I was buying children’s T-shirts that commemorated an unjust war. I calmly told her that I wanted my grandchildren to know the history of WWII, and that my dad had served in the Navy in the Pacific and I was both proud of and grateful for his service. She rolled her eyes and muttered a curse word under her breath as she walked off. I was sad because I felt that she was acting without knowing the facts. Is it going to be just a matter of time until the average person knows nothing of WWII? I hope not, and I encourage anyone wanting to know more, to come and visit this extraordinary museum in Fredericksburg, TX…The National Museum of the Pacific War.
So sad, all of those young men and women who died on Dec. 7th 1941 and WWII died for that young girls freedom, and she rolls her eyes. Not much age difference from her and those that served and serve our country. Some people don’t have any appreciation for the sacrifice many made on behalf of this country, simply some of the younger generation is so self absorbed (the all about me generation).
The greatest generation will soon be lost to the ages and their stories with them.
They will be missed. Hopefully this younger generation will see the light and appreciate what the previous generations have done to provide the freedoms that we have today.
