Summer Camp, Good Times...

Summer Camp Kids

It’s down to the last gasp of summer…have your kids or grandkids been to summer camp yet? Oh, the lists and mighty preparations that are made to send kiddos off to camp for a few weeks. In our family, the kids all go to camp out in West Texas at Prude Ranch Summer Camp. This camp is located on an actual ranch that was started back in 1897 by the Prude family. Summer camps began as a way to make extra money and to give city kids a chance to experience ranch life in the beautiful Davis Mountains, just outside the historic town of Fort Davis, TX. This year we sent 3 grandkids that spent a week or two hiking, riding horses daily, swimming and doing as many activities as they could cram into a daily schedule including, archery, riflery, cooking, games, crafts, pranking, sleeping under the stars, going to a dance, climbing trees, singing songs around a campfire, and finally falling asleep in their bunks to dream of the next day’s adventures. At the end of camp, we watched the final rodeo competitions, lip sync skits, and awards ceremonies before loading up tired kids, with smelly laundry and trunks for the 6-hour drive back home. Good times, and it seems not so very long ago that it was my own children that we were driving home. How can that have been 30+ years ago?
