In our area school will be starting on August 14, and some schools have already started their fall semesters. To my way of thinking, August hardly qualifies to be considered fall. Once upon a time school did not start until after Labor Day and school was dismissed by Memorial Day giving kids 3 full months of freedom from homework. We all understand now that 3 months was too long and many kids lost a good amount of what they had learned over the break. Say goodbye to long summers!
So, even though it looks and feels like summer, be aware in the coming weeks and let’s keep our eyes open. Look out for kiddos walking and riding bikes to school. You might even want to donate school supplies to an organization that will distribute them to children in need, or even better, you might think about signing up to be a mentor, or to read to kids in the library. I guarantee you will get more out of the experience than you might think.
